Prem and Saroj Kohli welcomed their son Virat into the world on November 5, 1988, in Delhi, India. In contrast to his mother, who is a homemaker, his father practiced criminal law. With 2818 international runs in that year, he became the highest-scoring Indian player of all time and the third-highest in a calendar year.

He was the top-ranked player in the ICC Test rankings in August 2018. He became the seventh batter from India to reach this milestone in this way. In October 2018, he became the first skipper, first Indian, and tenth player overall to score three consecutive hundreds in one-day internationals.
